Christchurch people aim for happy Christmas

On Christmas eve, television reports showed Christchurch people with mixed emotions over the latest spate of violent quakes to hit the city. There is a feeling in the city  that the latest quakes are a cruel blow to their confidence and peace of mind, just when they were thinking the worst was over.

Accolade for choice of new minister

John Key’s choice of Dr Nick Smith as Minister for Local Government has won approval from Hamilton’s Mayor, who was warned by previous Minister Rodney Hide that the council could be replaced by commissioners after financial fallout surrounding the V8 supercar races held in Hamilton.

Fears that the downstream effects of the Canterbury earthquakes might pollute Christchurch’s water supply led to chlorine being added to the city’s water. But now the pollution risk is gone, it’s time for a mini celebration.
