A series of aftershocks hit Canterbury from the early hours of January 2.
After a 3.3 magnitude quake at 7.38 the previous night and a 4.0 at five past ten, there were 13 quakes before 11am on January 2, including one of 5.1 magnitude and another of 5.5.
