Sam Hackett of Thomson Survey Ltd in Kerikeri has become the first person in the country to achieve the InfraTrain National Diploma in Surveying – Level 6.
The National Diploma was launched by InfraTrain at the end of 2008 and was developed in partnership with industry experts from the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors (NZIS).
It is aimed at survey technicians working in civil construction and land development, and combines theoretical knowledge with practical work-based skills.
Sam joined Thomson Survey as a technician trainee in 2002 and is now the office manager. He is involved in a range of surveying work, including subdivision and construction surveys as well as GPS control surveys for Land Information New Zealand. He is also involved in running projects, managing planners, clients and jobs.
Sam says, “I decided to work towards the National Diploma in Surveying to gain formal recognition of my skills and knowledge. It is achieved on the job, so I was able to combine work and study.
“The National Diploma is well-regarded by the surveying sector, and will benefit me a great deal in my career.
“I would like to acknowledge my employer, Denis Thomson, who gave his time and support to help me achieve the qualification.”
Denis Thomson describes Sam as “an exceptional young person. He has accomplished a great deal and I’m proud of what he has learned at our company. Sam does everything now ― from dealing with clients and producing estimates, right through to senior surveyor tasks.
“Supporting Sam to achieve the National Diploma in Surveying has definitely benefited our business. It’s an excellent qualification and gives status to the skills and knowledge which Sam has gained.”
Andrew Stirling, NZIS president says the National Diploma in Surveying is a rigorous qualification and he is impressed with the dedication Sam has shown to become the first surveyor to complete it.
“There are many challenges involved in achieving a workplace qualification to this level. Sam has shown the way and he will have an outstanding career in surveying. I hope that many others will be inspired and follow his example.”
