Mayor takes a swing at Government's Supercity plans

In Turua Street, St Heliers, the bulldozers have this morning set about demolishing three 1930s ‘art deco’ cottages, the subject of a neighbourhood campaign to preserve them.

A developer had gone to court to reinforce his right to to demolish the cottages, and the Environment Court declined a residents' request to preserve them.

Even as various court actions were continuing over the past week or more, t
here was some acceptance among local protestors that the demolition would go ahead.

The cottages will be replaced with a shopping, office and apartment block.
