In Turua Street, St Heliers, the bulldozers have this morning set about demolishing three 1930s ‘art deco’ cottages, the subject of a neighbourhood campaign to preserve them.
A developer had gone to court to reinforce his right to to demolish the cottages, and the Environment Court declined a residents' request to preserve them.
Even as various court actions were continuing over the past week or more, there was some acceptance among local protestors that the demolition would go ahead.
The cottages will be replaced with a shopping, office and apartment block.
